Everyone in America knows what Hollywood is. But do people know what Bollywood is? Bollywood is the Indian version of Hollywood and the largest movie producer in the world. It produces about one thousand films each year. Indian films are shown in over 90 countries around the world. The first Indian film was Alam Ara on March 14, 1931 by Ardershir Irani. In those days Indian films were mostly based upon books such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. In most hindi films the dialogue was said in Hindu, but now days there is alot of English incorperated with the other dialogue. Indian films were mostly based on heroic stories with singing and dancing. Now, there are other types of Indian films that are being created. Now that there is a greater technology to create movies, its easier to create new ideas. Indian film makers are now struggling with the idea of breaking away from traditional themes for Indian movies, or to embrace the new Western ideas.

Skit:
Jamal: a new bollywood actor
Latika: an old bollywood actress
Latika: [runs through the fields of corns]
Jamal: What you be doin? [What are you doing?]
Latika: Me bhagriun through the corn fields. [I am running through the corn fields].
Jamal: And why you be doin that? [And why are you doing that].
Latika: This is what heroine actresses do when they are in love in Bollywood movies. And why are you talking like that?
Jamal: This is whack. This is the new generation acting, we don’t run through the fields, we just hang.
Latika: What do you know? Are you in love? Who are you in love with?
Jamal: Tumare ami. [Your mom].
Latika: You know what? You are off your rocker. This is not appropriate manners here in India.
Jamal: Honeybuns, now days we don’t roll like that. We be improving our technology and we be advancing with the world.
Latika: Oh you and the young generation, you have no respect for us and the old Indian culture. Unfortunately we will never keep our tradition alive with you ignorant fools.
Jamal: Don’t be hatin just cause we be evolving. Stick with program, you know what I mean?
Latika: Here, watch these classic Hindi films like Khabi Kushi Khabi Ghum. These ought to teach you some manners. Tum pagal hogayee. [you have gone crazy].
Jamal: And you watch Dhoom and learn how to break it down.
