Indian Food:

Western Influences Vs. Traditional Herritage

Much of India's traditional foods are now being increasingly lost in today’s hectic culture. With fast food like McDonald’s, older, more traditional foods that take longer to prepare are now used less and less often. While McDonalds does take Hindu and Muslim culture into consideration by creating beef and pork free foods, many Indians are losing the grasp of true cultural cuisine. Most Indians take pride in  their home cooked food, but rising food service sales are encouraging companies like McDonald’s to venture into the Indian market.

Through out India, as with many other parts of the world, there is this struggle between the older generations and the younger people. While the obvious changes are clearer and  more expected to be seen, the clothing, music, forms of entertainment, it is something as simple and mundane as the everday food of the people that truely shows the changes that have occured in the recent years of the country.

Skit:

Young Kid: But Pappa! All the other kids get to eat at McDonalds! Why can’t we just go there once?

Dad: No! I will not let you eat that American poison!

Kid: Please!? Even Kumar’s dad took him there for his birthday, why can’t I go?

Dad: You will respect your grandparents, and we are to hold your birthday celebrations here at this house. Now sit down and eat your chutney.

Kid: But they have the McCurry pan!

Dad: McCurry pan!? What in the name of all that his holy is that? That rubbish will rupture your intestines and leave you in diarrhea for days!

Kid: They have a Maharaja Mac…

Dad: WHAT!? I raised you a vegetarian! What have these devils of McDonal’s done to you!?

Kid: All we eat is this rice, and lentils…

Dad: You will be glad to have food on your table! When I was your age, there were days I would come home to nothing to eat.

Kid: I hate you! You never let me do anything

!

Dad: You should be thankful for what you have!

Kid: AHHHHHHHHH! No! I’m am going to run away to a McDonald’s in Mumbai!

*Runs out of the house*

Dad: Oh no… How have times changed to become like this?
