In every culture change is made whether it be a big change in society or a slight change. For one thing, change is definite in both positive and negative ways. India has made many changes, socially, economically and politically all through the years. One major thing that has been apart of India’s culture for awhile however, is Bollywood, the film industry. Bollywood has made many changes in its movies. The Bollywood movies used to stay in India and travel to small parts of neighboring countries but now Bollywood has reached all parts of the world. The concepts Bollywood movies have stayed relatively the same, music and love with slight chances of course. Bollywood films, have been influenced by Western films and the films now show more modern ideas and ways of life, when they used to show only traditional Indian lifestyles. Although Bollywood has changed over the years, it still produces more movies then any other film industry in the world.
The above movie poster from “Old Bollywood”, all of the words on the poster are in Hindu. The Old Bollywood poster represents old Indian ways and ways of life.
The movie poster from “New Bollywood” is all in English and the people are dressed in more Westernized clothing. Also, more Westernization can be seen in the poster, for example the train in the background.
Anil Kapoor: 1980’s Bollywood actor.
Imran Khan: Present day Bollywood actor.
Anil: The movies produced today are far less entertaining then the movies of my time!
Imran: Are you kidding? Our technology and effects are more advanced then your cheap, ancient technology.
Anil: Good technology means nothing, your acting has no culture.
Imran: My era has plenty of culture, times change.
Anil: Are you kidding? You call a green screen culture?
Imran: The times have changed, so our form of acting improved.
Anil: The technology did nothing but take away original Bollywood tradition.
Imran: I have nothing to say but that both eras of entertainment, whether 20 years ago or today, both are good in their own way.
Anil: I agree, and although I see some things I don’t enjoy about 21st century Bollywood, they both do have their ups and downs.
