There is a struggle of modernization and keeping old practices in the country of India. There are changes in clothing, art, literature, technology, social beliefs, and religion. Before Indian society was affected by westernization, there was no conflict. However, after, the people of India have been divided into what is known as the “tug of war.” The most noticeable of these changes is in the technology, but more specifically is in the type of transportation that the Indian people use every day. In India, before the introduction of motorized vehicles, there were different types of transportation. There were human rukshas, and these were buggies that had servants dragging them. Then after that, were the bull drawn wagons, which were wagons that were pulled by bulls and other animals. Finally, the last traditional transportation was the introduction of the bicycle, to make the cycle ruksha, which was ridden by a servant to move a buggy. Then, the westernization occurred with the introduction of the motorized vehicles. With this, came the modern ruksha. After the ruksha came the steam trains, and finally our modern cars. These are huge advances and we chose this because this really depicted the “tug of war,” by showing how the country was affected by modernization. It also showed how the country faces the differences from the older generation, who still use those older types of transportation, in contrast to the newer generation, who use the modernized vehicles. This is the major “tug of war” in India now.

Traditional Dull Drawn Carriage
Bull Drawn Carriages were the major type of transportation back before there was any type of motorized vehicle. Now, people believe that they should still use these types of transportation in order to preserve their culture and also keep their old ways of doing things alive.

Modern Train
Modern trains have made it easier for people to travel to different places. For example, they can travel for long distances and not have to worry about anything. But however, there still is debate about this because, some people believe that it is unethical for people to use this type of transportation because it goes against their beliefs to use transportation that goes against their old principles.

Modern Train
Human drawn carriages were a type of transportation, in which a servant pulls a cart while the master rides on the seat behind him. Now, people believe that they should still use these types of transportation in order to preserve their culture and also keep their old ways of doing things alive. But, however, the westernization, that occurred has given it a bad image so, people do not ride on them as much.

Modern Car
Volkswagen is seeing the potential for the growth of these cars in India’s market. They will expand and create more dealerships in India. This causes a “tug of war” because some people believe that it is not a good thing to go against their old practices and ways of doing things.
Dialoge
Scene 1
Omar: Hello there citizen!
Ahmad: Hello how are you?
Omar: I am well where to?
Ahmad: Can you bring me to the market?
Omar: Sure. Where are you from?
Ahmad: I am from western India. I am a Muslim.
Omar: I am also brother.
Ahmad: Yes so how are you liiking driving taxis?
Omar: They are nice for transportation but it angers me that many of teh divers are Muslims. It shows how the
Hindus are treated better in this country.
Ahmad: I agree they are also quite expensive. It helps because I remember 30 years ago when there was no public transportations.
Omar: They are quite expensive but is is worth it because of the terrible busses and subway that are publicaly
provided.
Ahmad: They are pretty bad. The subway is especially dirty and it is packed with people.
Omar: Yes so here is your stop.
Ahmad: Thank you brother.
Scene 2
Omar: Now it is time to report back to the station.
Scene: Omar gets out of teh car and then pretends to get on a train. Omar gets pushed around on the train and
is pick pocketed by Rajin.
Rajin: Now it is time to go shopping.
Scene: Rajin buys some fruits and pays the bus diver.
Rajin: I like this bus, it is better than a crowded train.
Omar: Wow I just got pick pocketed and I do not want to ride that dirty train ever again. I don't like the people
on the train and it is bad. I need to start taking the cleaner better busses. I just hope that the comute by
foot is not as bad because I have a human rikshaw. But they are so slow!
Rajin: I liked that bus ride, it was cheap and good. There didn't used to be something like that. Maybe after I
save my money I can get a car like the rich people.
Omar: I wish I was rich so I could get a car and not have to have my servant drive me everywhere on his small
rikshaw.
